In a tradition
of quality
Glenfont Habitry
creates and produces garments from the western monastic
tradition. Garments include the religious habits of old and
established Orders, habits for more recent endeavors,
associated garments stemming from the monastic tradition such as
cloister jackets and robes of various styles and uses and a line of
accessories for the various types of garments made including
rosaries, medals, clips and crosses as appropriate.
Glenfont Archival Trust
acquires and maintains collections of religious apparel, the
collection often remaining in private ownership. The Trust is
also creating its own archive of period religious
apparel.
The making of
religious habits and related types of garments is a restricted
activity both because of the narrow focus of the subject and because
of its religious association and use. Basically, religious
habits are uniforms and generally categorized as such. As all
uniforms, they are subject to the standardization, regulation and
the usages of specific groups with their particular histories
and traditions.
Because of these
qualities, the neophytes entering such a group were taught to
respect the uniform and care for it. It can easily be
understood then that the uniform of a group was jealously guarded
and worn only by group members who had been through the training and
initiation proper to the particular group. The United States
Marines and the Royal Marines of Great Britain come to mind as
excellent examples of this and are by no means unique in the
field.
We specialize in the
production of habits and related garments for Orders and
Congregations of men and women in the Roman tradition as well as the
Anglican, Episcopal and Lutheran traditions.
For those whose interest lies
in period religious habiliment, we have the M.H. Heritage
Reproductions page addressing the growing interest in period uniform
dress. For further information, prices, production
