| Glenfont Habitry produces religious habits and some related garments from the Western Monastic tradition for men and women. The following pages detail what we do and display some of our products. The making of religious habits and related types of garments is a restricted activity both because of the narrow focus of the subject and because of its religious association and use. Basically, religious habits are uniforms and generally categorized as such. As all uniforms, they are subject to the standardization, regulation and the usages of specific groups with their particular histories and traditions. Because of these qualities, the neophytes entering such a group were taught to respect the uniform and care for it. It can easily be understood then that the uniform of a group was jealously guarded and worn only by group members who had been through the training and initiation proper to the particular group. The United States Marines and the Royal Marines of Great Britain come to mind as excellent examples of this and are by no means unique in the field. At Glenfont we make religious habits with these considerations in mind. We cannot be enforcers of religious customs or requirements and we assume those who request habits do so with a respect for the history and traditions of these religious uniforms just as respect is given to the history and tradition of military uniforms. It is in this spirit that we engage in our chosen mission of assisting to renew and perpetuate the use of religious habits. |
